Golden State CrossFit is more than a gym; it’s a place where strength, resilience, and community come together. Its roots trace back to Antioch CrossFit, but its story is one of transformation—of a gym, a community, and the lives of everyone who walks through its doors.

What began as my personal journey of movement and discipline has grown into a thriving community of people striving to reach their own “golden state” of health and fitness. Here’s how Golden State CrossFit came to be, survived challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, and continues to inspire and empower individuals today.

The Early Days: Wrestling and Breakdancing

My love for movement started early. Growing up in Northern California, I spent countless hours on the wrestling mats. Wrestling taught me the value of discipline, hard work, and showing up every day, even when it was tough. It wasn’t just a sport; it was a foundation for resilience.

Later, I discovered breakdancing, and my world changed. Breakdancing combined athleticism, creativity, and self-expression in ways that wrestling couldn’t. It pushed me to explore what my body was capable of and ignited a passion for movement as an art form.

Competing—and winning—breakdancing competitions across California became a big part of my life. The highlight of my breakdancing journey came when I earned a spot on the Golden State Warriors’ entertainment team “GS Breakers”. Performing in front of thousands of fans was exhilarating, and it showed me the power of movement to inspire and connect people.

But I always knew I wanted to do more with what I’d learned. I wanted to create a space where people could experience the same joy and transformation that movement had given me.


The Turning Point: Taking Over Antioch CrossFit

The opportunity came when I had the chance to take over Antioch CrossFit from its original owners, Coach Al and Shan Lagang. They had built a strong community, and I saw an opportunity to honor their work while creating something uniquely my own.

I renamed the gym Golden State CrossFit as a tribute to my journey with the Golden State Warriors and to symbolize transformation—the idea that everyone has the potential to reach their own “golden state” of health and fitness.

Taking over a gym was a challenge. It meant learning the ins and outs of running a business, building relationships with members, and creating a vision for what Golden State CrossFit could become. But I was ready. I brought my background in strength, conditioning, and movement to the table and got to work.

From the beginning, my vision for Golden State CrossFit was clear:

  1. Community at the Core: I wanted to create a space where people felt supported, encouraged, and part of something bigger than themselves.
  2. Expert Coaching: With my background as a Level 2 CrossFit coach and years of experience in weight lifting, break dancing and conditioning, I knew I could bring a high level of expertise to help members achieve their goals.
  3. Programs for Everyone: Whether someone was completely new to fitness or an experienced athlete, I wanted Golden State CrossFit to offer something for everyone, from beginner-friendly programs like “40 Days to Fit” to advanced training.

Surviving the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic tested every small business, and Golden State CrossFit was no exception. When lockdowns forced gyms to close, it felt like the world had turned upside down.

But giving up wasn’t an option. Instead, we adapted:

  • Virtual Classes: We quickly transitioned to online workouts to keep our community engaged.
  • Equipment Lending: Members borrowed equipment to continue training from home.
  • Community Check-Ins: We prioritized staying connected, holding virtual hangouts and check-ins to support mental health during the isolation.

Those months were some of the toughest I’ve experienced as a business owner. But they also showed me the strength of our community. Members didn’t just show up—they encouraged each other, stayed connected, and reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.

When we reopened, Golden State CrossFit came back stronger than ever, with a renewed focus on resilience and adaptability.
